On 30 September SAG u.19 boys traveled from George to Bloemfontein to participate in the Nedbank Grey College soccer tournament. The first round of the tournament was a round robin wit the top two teams proceeding to the knockout stages for the cup. The Tigers beat Waterstone 3-0 in their first game of the tournament, with goals from Myolisi and a brace from Booysen. Our second game saw us meet St.Andrews, Grahamstown, the score was 1-1 at halftime. Matayi and Star were brought on at halftime and completely changed the game for the Tigers who went on to win the game 6-1. The Tigers couldn’t have finished their first day any better with 2 wins out of 2. The next game was the all important 1st place decider in the group with the Tigers taking on tournament favourites KES. It was a tough game for both teams with both sets of attackers struggling to score and ended in a 0-0 draw, with many people saying it was one of the best games of football they’ve ever seen.
The last group game was against Northwood who we beat 2-0 with goals from Sky and Luzuko, leaving the Tigers second in the group on goal difference. In the quarter finals we met Robinvale who had cruised through the group stage. It was a tough encounter with the Tigers defending the whole first half of the match struggling to get any attack going but then a moment of brilliance came from our left back Lunga who scored a free kick from the halfway line. Tigers were leading 1-0 at the half but Ronbinvale equalised soon after half time with a goal coming from a corner. Both teams couldn’t score and it went to penalties. Unfortunately we missed out on the deciding penalty and the Tigers ended 8th overall after another two games against Jeppe and Brebner High Schools in the play offs. This was our first year attending the Nedbank Grey College tournament, and we were proud to be one of 20 teams invited to participate. We received the fair play trophy for the discipline shown on and off the field. It was a great effort by our boys and we look forward to returning next year!
