Tigers Back in Action

The Sports Academy u17 footballers were back in action during the half term break. Fresh from their victory in Port Elizabeth, the Tigers attended the annual Hyundai Tournament hosted by George United FC from the 24th26th June at the Red River Playing Fields. Sports Academy, who would be defending their title from 2015, kicked off the group stage against Holy Cross FC from Cape Town, the game ended in a stalemate as both teams struggled to adapt to the wet playing conditions. As the skies cleared up on Saturday the Tigers found their rhythm and cruised through the day with resounding victories over Vista FC and Parkdene High School before despatching hosts George United (3 1) in the semi final. The last game of the tournament was the same as the first as the Tigers faced off against Holy Cross in the 2016 final. Sports Academy found the first half difficult as Holy Cross dominated possession and deservedly took the lead through a powerful header at the back post from a corner. The second was a different story and stand out performances from Wara, Mjobi, Ntsika, Booysen and Siphelele Booi saw the Tigers restore parity with a cool side footed finish from, player of the tournament, Luzuko Sabelisiva. The game would remain 1 1 and so the trophy would be decided on penalty kicks, unfortunately Luzuko, who had found the net 10 times in the tournament, failed to convert from the spot and Holy Cross were victorious 5 4 to take the cup home to Cape Town. The boys were a great credit to Sports Academy in the way they handled the disappointment of defeat and we have no doubt this result will stand us in good stead for the Grey College Invitational in Bloemfontein this October.
